Understanding Color by BlenderGuru

https://www.blenderguru.com/tutorials/understanding-colors

Eyes should be drawn to the most important part of the composition.
Can have secondary and tertiary focus.

Saturation - Intensity and purity of color
Value - Brightness or darkness of the color
• Don't overdo it
• Use it to guide the viewer
• Use it to tell the story
• Use it to change the mood
• Draw attention to something

Color Harmonies:

MONOCHROMATIC
• Use only one color
• Best for single subjects
• Atmospheric effect

ANALOGOUS
• Colors (about 3) next to each other on wheel
• Easy on eyes
• Peaceful comfortable mood
• Seen a lot in nature

TRIADIC
• Equal distance on wheel
• Hard to pull off
• Best for cartoon/surreal scenes

COMPLEMENTARY
• Opposing colors on wheel
• Very popular
• Naturally pleasing to eye
• Use one color predominantly (avoid 50-50)
• Balance 1 bright, with opposite color more desaturated

SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY
• Similar to complementary, but one end extended
• More creative freedom using 3 colors
• Feels more lively and joyous
(Eg: Purple, green, yellow -- Orange, green, blue -- red, green, blue -- blue, red, orange -- pink, yellow, green)

TETRATIC (Double Complementary)
• Two pairs of opposing colors
• Best used for foregrounds and backgrounds
• Never equally use 25% of each. Vary the amounts that are used
• Hard but pleasing
(green-red foreground, violet-yellow background -- yellow over dark blue, orange over aqua)

SATURATION - use it sparingly. Best for highlighting areas of interest or telling story.
VALUE - use values of high contrast to draw attention
